Fur Traders Descending the Missouri

I was talking with our art teacher Kimberly a week ago about this painting. How do you explain the beauty of a painting like this. I loved this painting the moment I saw it and it continues to haunt me. I can hear the silence of the boat gliding across my frame of vision.  The fur trader and his son glance at me as they float by. Not a word is needed. is it dusk or dawn?

I think I know why I've always been drawn to this painting. It's the independent spirit of this man. He's a freelancer like myself. All he needs are traps and a boat and he can make a living. And the beauty of the river and the lifestyle it affords him are his reward. It's very American.
