This is what I aspire to in portraiture. I love everything about this painting. The shadow across the face. The hair. The unusual lighting. The dispassionate expression. Rembrandt was the first artist I was taught about as a sophomore in H.S. My teacher admired his sketches in particular. In an amazing coincidence, my family took a trip to Washington D.C. the summer after my drawing class. We went to the National Gallery of Art where there was special show of Rembrandt's landscape sketches. It impacted me deeply.
